About Us
Sisters of Mercy Ministries (SMM) is an organization comprised of
two functions: grant making and the operation of sponsored
outreach ministries in New Orleans and throughout Mississippi. A
wholly owned subsidiary of the Sisters of Mercy Health System, SMM
continues the work of the sisters who have been serving in these areas
for more than a century. The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas are
an international community of Roman Catholic women vowed to serve
people who suffer poverty, sickness and lack of education, with a
special concern for women and children. In innovative and traditional
ways they address human needs through collaborative efforts in
healthcare, and social service.
Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, devoted her
life to ministering to Dublin’s poor, sick and uneducated. In
doing so, she established a heritage of caregiving and commitment
that continues today in the Sisters of Mercy ministries throughout
the world. That heritage is the foundation of the mission and
vision of the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of St. Louis. Their
service region encompasses seven south central states including Arkansas,
Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. The
Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of St. Louis sponsors the Sisters
of Mercy Health System, a network of physicians, healthcare facilities
and related health and social services, and SMM's parent organization.
