History
Sisters of Mercy Ministries grew out of actions the Sisters of Mercy
Health System (Mercy) found difficult but necessary to take in the
early 1990s. Hospitals in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and New Orleans,
Louisiana, were competing in over-bedded areas, and attempts at joining
with other healthcare institutions proved ineffective. Selling the
hospitals became an inevitable decision, but leaving those long-served
communities was not.
For Mercy, remaining faithful to the ministry of Sisters of Mercy foundress
Catherine McAuley meant a pledge to continue supporting its service commitment
in communities once served by these hospitals. In 1996, Mercy created Sisters
of Mercy Ministries (SMM) as a visible means to further its mission and honor
its commitment.
